𝗔 𝗧𝗿𝗶𝗯𝘂𝘁𝗲 𝘁𝗼 𝗝𝗣𝗥 𝗪𝗶𝗹𝗹𝗶𝗮𝗺𝘀

One of the plans which was set in stone for early 2024 at the Groggshop was an updated 9” Limited Edition of JPR Williams as, to me, JPR conjured up the essence of the 1974 unbeaten Lions in South Africa. Therefore, the 50th anniversary of that unforgettable tour seemed like perfect timing. Sadly, the rugby world was shocked and saddened to hear of his passing in January this year, so my plans were put on hold.

As most Grogg collectors know, JPR was one of the original two, named rugby figures made by my father in 1970. The world’s first genuine rugby superstar, John was a huge influence on me in my early teens and was largely responsible for my decision to become a Groggmaker. He has been my favourite subject for over 50 years and after a lot of soul searching, I decided we should go ahead with the new figure as a tribute to the great man. 

I had a particular image of John in mind…. standing tall, arms behind his back, wearing his famous headband, singing the anthem and with his defiant attitude of “None shall pass” evident in his demeanour. I hope after all these years my latest figure of JPR does him justice.
