Llanelli v New Zealand 50th Anniversary Grogg
On the 31st of October 1972, in Llanelli RFC’s centenary year, Carwyn James masterminded a superb win over Ian Kirkpatrick’s 7th All Blacks at Stradey Park. After leading the British Lions to the first (and only) series win over New Zealand on their own soil in 1971 Carwyn had quietly plotted the unthinkable….to beat the All Blacks with his own beloved Llanelli team. Anyone who was there will never forget that day. I myself was only 13 and was allowed to roam free within the ground. As the final whistle blew I also joined the inevitable invasion of the pitch in celebration of this momentous achievement by a club side over a touring All Blacks team. Indeed, in a vain effort to reach Captain Delme Thomas, who was being chaired around the field, I had my toes trodden on by an All Black forward keen to leave the pitch in the mayhem that ensued! The result reverberated around the rugby world and it’s no surprise the pubs ran dry in Llanelli that night!
As for me it was the beginning of a love affair with rugby union which has gone on for 50 years and the events of that incredible day will live with me forever.
Happy Anniversary Llanelli and thanks for the memories.
